Russian skater tests positive for banned substance, jeopardizing team standing

Russian Olympic Committee skater Kamila Valieva tested positive for a banned heart medication in December 2021, the latest infraction for a country with a history of doping. The ROC skating team won gold on Feb. 7, with the United States winning silver, Japan winning bronze and Canada placing a distant fourth.

Valieva, the 15-year-old skater who became the first woman ever to land a quadruple jump at the Olympics, is awaiting a decision on whether she will be allowed to participate in the women’s individual competition next week.
